GEO vs AEO vs LLM SEO: What Is the Difference?

GEO vs AEO vs LLM SEO: What Is the Difference?

The short answer: GEO, AEO and LLM SEO are overlapping industry labels, not three separate marketing disciplines. GEO usually describes work intended to support visibility in generative or AI-assisted discovery. AEO focuses on making answers easy to find, understand and verify. LLM SEO is an informal term that different providers use in different ways.

For most businesses, the work underneath is familiar: publish accurate buyer information, make important pages accessible to search engines, show evidence for important claims, organise content clearly and keep it current. Build those foundations before buying a specialised label. No method can guarantee a first ranking, an AI mention or a citation. Google explains that SEO helps search engines understand content and helps users find a site and decide whether to visit; it does not provide a secret route to automatic top rankings.

Why these terms can confuse buyers

The labels sound precise, but they are not official Google product categories. Google’s documentation defines SEO and provides quality guidance, yet it does not define GEO, AEO or LLM SEO. That distinction matters when comparing agency proposals, software subscriptions and internal plans.

One provider may use “LLM SEO” to mean rewriting pages and improving product facts. Another may mean monitoring a selected set of questions in AI tools. A GEO programme might include technical SEO, editorial work, product-data cleanup and digital PR. Those scopes may all be reasonable, but the label alone tells you very little.

Ask what will actually change: the pages involved, the facts that need evidence, the technical work, the platforms being observed and the way results will be measured. Those answers are more useful than the acronym on the cover of a proposal.

GEO vs AEO vs LLM SEO at a glance

Label Primary emphasis Likely deliverables What you can measure What needs proof
GEO Generative and AI-assisted discovery Topic coverage, consistent company and product facts, evidence-led pages, technical cleanup Page completeness, crawlability, referral patterns where available and qualified leads Any claim of inclusion, citation or prominence in a particular AI answer
AEO Clear answers to buyer questions FAQs, comparisons, definitions, service pages, concise summaries and source support Search performance, question-page engagement, lead quality and sales feedback Guaranteed answer-box, featured-result or AI-answer placement
LLM SEO Optimisation for discovery shaped by large language models Provider-defined; often fact consistency, content structure and answer monitoring Documented test prompts, factual accuracy, referred traffic and conversions That a provider has a platform-approved method to influence model answers

The overlap is substantial. All three should help a buyer establish what you sell, who it is for, where you operate, what is included or excluded, and why your claims deserve trust.

GEO: broad work for generative discovery

Generative engine optimisation is best treated as a broad operating label. Its practical aim is to make useful company information easier to discover and reuse when people research a problem through AI-assisted interfaces as well as conventional search.

Start with the questions that precede a sale: “Which provider serves this area?”, “What is included?”, “What are the alternatives?”, “Is this suitable for a company of our size?” Match each question to a strong, maintained page instead of scattering partial answers across blog posts, social updates and sales decks.

For a UAE business, a useful GEO-oriented service page might distinguish Dubai-only delivery from UAE-wide coverage, state whether quoted prices are in AED, explain important exclusions and identify the team responsible for fulfilment. A B2B supplier may also need to clarify whether it serves Abu Dhabi directly, works through a distributor, or provides on-site support only under particular contracts. These are not decorative local details. They are decision-making facts that reduce avoidable uncertainty for buyers and procurement teams.

The same principle applies to bilingual content. Do not simply duplicate pages to claim Arabic and English coverage. Where both languages are used, important commercial facts, service limitations, contact routes and terminology should remain consistent. Give one owner responsibility for resolving differences when they emerge.

AEO: answer clarity, findability and verification

AEO puts more weight on the answer itself. A strong AEO page gives the direct response early, then supplies conditions, examples, limits and evidence. It avoids the familiar mistake of placing a simple answer after several paragraphs of generic introduction.

This does not mean publishing thin FAQ pages for every keyword variation. A useful answer must match the service or product page, be written with input from someone who understands the offer, and be updated when the underlying fact changes. If sales or operations cannot stand behind an answer, it should not be published as settled fact.

For example, a facilities-management company could answer “Do you cover Sharjah?” with a clear service-area statement, the types of contracts it accepts, any site-assessment requirement and the contact route for an exception. That is more useful than an unqualified “Yes” designed solely to capture a query.

See our guide to what businesses actually need from AEO for the operational view. The test is straightforward: can a buyer understand the answer, check its basis and take the next sensible step without contacting your company simply to decode it?

LLM SEO: an informal label that needs defining

“LLM SEO” usually means work intended to improve how a business is understood in discovery experiences shaped by large language models. It may overlap almost entirely with GEO, or it may be limited to prompt testing and content recommendations. Treat it as a commercial description, not a fixed technical standard.

Do not assume that an LLM provider has published an official optimisation framework. The supplied OpenAI API documentation is product and API documentation; it does not define LLM SEO or establish a method for influencing ChatGPT answers. A credible provider should not imply otherwise.

Before approving an LLM SEO package, ask these questions:

If the answers are generic, you may be buying a label rather than a programme with accountable work.

What remains conventional SEO

Conventional SEO is the foundation, not an old channel that GEO replaces. You still need pages that search engines can access and understand, sensible internal linking, accurate titles and headings, useful content, and a clear path from search result to conversion. Google’s SEO Starter Guide frames SEO around helping search engines understand content and helping users decide whether to visit.

Quality remains non-negotiable. Google’s people-first guidance asks publishers to assess originality, substantial value, sourcing, expertise and factual accuracy. These are equally useful standards for an AEO answer, a GEO content brief or a conventional service page. Read the full helpful, reliable, people-first content guidance before treating AI-discovery work as a shortcut around editorial discipline.

What structured data can and cannot do

Structured data can give Google clearer clues about a page’s meaning and may make a page eligible for richer search-result treatments. It should describe the content that appears on the page itself. That makes it useful when implementation accurately reflects visible information about an organisation, product, service or other applicable page content.

It is not an AI-answer inclusion switch. Google says structured data provides explicit clues and can enable more engaging rich results; the documentation does not promise generative-answer visibility or citations. Validate markup, keep it aligned with visible copy and remove or update it when the page no longer supports the claim. Google explains its purpose and limitations in its structured data introduction.

Build a buyer-fact system before scaling content

The most useful shared investment across GEO, AEO and LLM SEO is a buyer-fact system: a controlled record of the claims your website makes. It is especially valuable where information changes across teams, emirates, distributors or service lines.

Start with high-consequence facts

List the statements that affect a purchase decision: service areas, eligibility, turnaround conditions, pricing basis, inclusions, exclusions, contract terms, specifications, certifications, support hours and contact routes. For each, record approved wording, its evidence source, an internal owner, a review date and the URLs where it appears.

Turn those facts into the right pages

A core service page explains the offer. A comparison page explains trade-offs. A location page states genuine operating coverage. An FAQ answers recurring conditions. A case study should state only outcomes the business can support. Use the same approved fact across these formats, but do not duplicate whole paragraphs merely to create more URLs.

Make maintenance a named task

Give sales, operations and compliance a simple route to report changes. Review high-risk facts after product, pricing, policy or coverage updates. This prevents a common UAE trust failure: one team describes a service as nationwide while another qualifies availability by emirate, supplier arrangement or contract type. Consistency is not cosmetic; it reduces buyer doubt and prevents avoidable sales friction.

Which approach should you prioritise?

Start with conventional SEO and the buyer-fact system if your site has unclear offers, thin service pages, conflicting claims or weak technical basics. That is the right first move for most businesses.

Add an AEO emphasis when prospects repeatedly ask the same pre-sale questions and your pages bury the answer. Add a GEO emphasis when you have a solid factual base and want broader coverage of AI-assisted research journeys. Use “LLM SEO” only after a provider defines its scope in practical, measurable terms.

How to measure the work without overclaiming

Measure at three levels. First, check implementation: are priority pages complete, internally linked, accurate and technically accessible? Second, check discovery: are relevant pages gaining qualified search visibility, visits or referrals where analytics can reliably attribute them? Third, check commercial value: are leads better qualified, are sales conversations shorter, and are repeated buyer objections falling?

Keep a dated test log for any AI-answer observation. Record the question, exact wording, relevant language or location context, the result and whether it was stable on repeat checks. Treat this as directional research, not evidence of a controllable ranking system. Personalisation, product changes and platform updates can alter outputs.

Can GEO, AEO or LLM SEO guarantee an AI mention?

No. A responsible provider can improve information quality, clarity, evidence, technical accessibility and measurement. They cannot honestly guarantee that a particular AI system will mention, cite or rank your business. If guaranteed placements are central to a proposal, ask for platform-specific documentation supporting that claim.
