Your competitor appears in ChatGPT. What should you check? One answer cannot tell you why a competitor appeared. Save the answer, check its sources and compare the information a buyer can find about both companies. Then fix an evidenced gap.

## First, repeat the question

Use a fresh conversation and record the platform, search mode, date and language. Repeat under comparable conditions. A changing answer is evidence of variation, not proof that your website changed.

## Can your relevant page be retrieved?

Inspect the page status, robots rules, noindex directives and canonical. Ask the hosting owner to check genuine crawler requests. Test whether the important content is readable without logging in.

## Does your page answer the buying question?

A generic agency page may not explain the service, sector or location the buyer asked about. Improve the most relevant existing page before creating another near-duplicate.

## What evidence do the cited sources provide?

Record the exact URLs. Check whether they describe the company’s services, experience or customer evidence. A citation establishes what the answer used, not every reason the system chose it.

## What is the next action?

Document one gap, change the relevant information and record the date. Recheck with the same method. Track enquiry quality alongside visibility rather than declaring success after a single mention.
